Chapter Ten

“Oh, doctor.” Tina giggled. “Why, I was just looking for Mr.—”

“I was trying,” Nick said, cutting Tina off before she gave him away, “to get an appointment to see you.” He hadn’t actually said he was Gunderson, but what he’d been doing was still illegal, unethical. He’d risked it for Dee. The risk could land him in hotter water than he was already in and end his career as a cop. But a risk he’d take again. For Dee.

Dr. Falls studied him, her gaze unnerving. How long had she been standing there? “Did you want an appointment for a professional consultation, Detective Rossetti, or does this have something else to do with Dare Hamilton?”

“Detective…?” Tina murmured.

Nick didn’t know how much Dr. Falls had overheard, but just in case it was less than he feared, he cut Tina off for a second time and caught Dee by the hand. “Maybe we could speak in your office?”

She studied him for a nerve-bending moment. “I think we should.” The doctor stepped aside, and Nick and Dee entered her private domain. She closed the door behind her.

Nick envisioned his career flushing down a toilet. How much had she overhead?

Dr. Falls pointed to her desk and the chairs facing it. No one moved in that direction. She glanced at the wall clock, then back at Nick, her taut smile giving nothing away. “What is so important that you had to lie to my receptionist?”

Nick ignored the jab. Best to keep on task. “We appreciate your seeing us without an appointment.”

Dee jumped in. “We realize you’re busy, Dr. Falls, and will try not to take up much of your time.”

“We wondered if you would explain to us exactly what an erotomaniac is,” Nick strove to hide the stress he felt from his voice.

“An erotomaniac?” The doctor’s auburn eyebrows lifted slightly. “Where did you hear that term?”

Nick shrugged, lifting his palms outward. “You do specialize in treating this type of obsession, don’t you?”

“Yes, but it’s not something I advertise. How did you learn it?”

“From Michael Pride,” Nick supplied.

She tensed. “I see.”

“He told us last night that you knew for certain a stalker was after my sister.”

“Mr. Pride is free to tell you anything he likes,” Breena said. “But, as you both know, I have no such freedom. I cannot discuss or expose anything from your sister’s, or Mr. Pride’s, sessions with me. Surely you understand, Ms. Hamilton, that my hands are tied?”

Doctor patient privilege isn’t relevant since my sister is dead. Especially since she was murdered.” Dee looked ready to slap handcuffs on the doctor and haul her in for questioning.

Instead, she took a deep breath, licked her lips as though they were dry, and said, “The same man who came after Dare was in my house yesterday.”

The doctor’s eyes widened. Another woman might have gasped, but Breena Falls was too cool, too restrained, Nick realized. She seemed to choose her next words with care. “As far as I know, Dare never actually saw or spoke with this alleged stalker—didn’t know if it was a man or woman.
